Chili First!
A Positive Agenda
for the Future of Our Town
We are pleased that
the Chili Town Board supports so many of the suggestions
below and many are now under way!
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:
-
Chili would benefit from an attractive,
inviting Town Center or
Main Street look in
the Chili Paul Plaza /
Old Town Hall Campus
area. We need a central place
for town residents to
gather, shop, and
socialize. Perhaps add a
gazebo, a clock tower or
a water fountain.
Wouldn't this be great!
-
Identify opportunities
for smart development
that is balanced with
enhancing and maintaining the
Town's character while
keeping historic
preservation in mind.
-
Consult with
experienced economic
development professionals
to provide expert
opinions on revitalizing the Town's
commercial core, supporting
current businesses
and proactively working to
attract new businesses
and positive economic
development of all types
throughout our Town.
-
Actively and
aggressively seek State and
Federal grant money and
corporate/private
support
for Town projects.
-
Decide if we need to
form an Architectural
Review Advisory
Committee. It would be a
good thing to set
standards consistent
with the Town's desire
to promote orderly and
harmonious development;
enhance the desirability
of residing in or
investing in our Town;
and promote visual
environments which are
of high aesthetic
quality and variety.
UPDATE: A committee is now
officially in place!
OPEN & RESPONSIVE
LEADERSHIP:
-
Encourage and allow
public participation at
all government meetings - including the
annual Organizational
meeting.
-
Increase the time
limit citizens have to
speak at the public
forum at Town Board
meetings from 3 minutes
to at least 5 minutes
(UPDATE: This will now be the
new rule beginning with
the January 17, 2008
meeting In addition, you
will no longer need to
sign up in advance to
speak)
-
Allow for a public
forum at the end of Town
Board meetings, with a
shorter time limit of two or
three minutes per
speaker. Citizens would
be able to comment and
provide feedback about
the meeting which just
occurred.
-
Publish a draft of Town
Board meeting Agendas on
the Town's web site for
public view in
advance of meetings - at
least 3 business days
before the meeting date.
(UPDATE: This is now being
done 5 days in
advance)
-
Include in the
minutes comments
made by citizens during
the Public Forum portion
of Town Board Meetings.
-
Tape and televise Town
Board meetings on cable
TV or streamed over the
Web.
(UPDATE: digital video steaming
is now available at the
Town's website for Town
Board, Planning Board
and Zoning Board of
Appeals meetings.)
-
Tape and televise all Town
Board Workshop meetings on cable
TV or streamed over the
Web.
-
Publish all committee
openings (in newspapers
and on the Town's web
site) for the Planning
Board and other town
committees to encourage
all citizens to apply.
(UPDATE: This now appears to be
the practice.)
-
Assure uniform and consistent
code enforcement by Town
officials.
BUDGET OVERSIGHT:
-
Schedule well-publicized
Public budget review
meetings when the public
can attend and provide a
power point presentation
on budget highlights.
-
Present a
detailed Executive
Summary on the Town's
website that includes
spending plan goals,
revenue and expense
assumptions and how the
budget fits in with the
Town's short and long
term goals.
